How Far Would You Run to Find a Home? After running 3,000 miles across the United States, Rickey Gates couldn’t help but feel like he’d missed out on something. His route showed him a super thin slice of the country and left him with more questions than answers. He wondered if it was possible to use running to really gain a deeper understanding of a place.
Rickey used to live in San Francisco and because that’s where his cross-country run had ended, it seemed like as good of a place as any to start his next adventure. So he decided he would run every single street in San Francisco. All 1,300 miles of them.
“I thought it would be interesting to turn it into a project and treat it similarly to someone who is going after say the Appalachian Trail or the Pacific Crest Trail and dedicate myself to it. You know 8, 10, 12 hours a day. And do it all in one go,” Rickey said.
