We Apologize for the Unexpected Downtime, Status Update
Strava went offline for a little over 2 hours yesterday afternoon, due to a failure of our web servers. If you tried to get to strava.com during this time you saw a server error message, which wasn’t very helpful. Normally, when we perform updates to the site, we post a maintenance page to let you know. It took us about 45 minutes, working with our hosting provider, to trace the cause of the problem. Once we were able to bring our servers back up, we posted our maintenance page, and then upgraded our web server software. We also made some upgrades we had planned for a later date, namely moving to a larger server cluster.
Today, we are experiencing intermittent issues with our database server, and are again working to try and resolve this problem as quickly as possible.
We’re very sorry for the inconvenience this is causing you. It’s not the way we like to run things at Strava, and we know it’s important to you to be able to upload and view your rides and data when you want to. We will post another update when we are back online and everything is stable. If you have any additional concerns, please contact the team at support@strava.com.
UPDATE: Yesterday (Thursday), we upgraded and reconfigured our database server. This should resolve the problem going forward, as well as provide some additional performance improvement. We will continue to tightly monitor server performance over the next couple of days, and next week we will work to put additional processes in place to help prevent outages of this duration from happening again.
