New on Strava today

Posted by Michael Horvath on April 30th, 2010

Here’s a brief summary of some new functionality on Strava as of today.

  • Activity chart scales with you - as you add more workouts, the chart’s scale accommodates the additional information
  • Edit all ride details later - change a bike or add a new bike, for example. Edit manually entered activities.
  • Faster search - searching is now, well… faster.
  • Improved upload flow – fewer clicks to get your data into Strava
  • Fixed annoying bugs - many small fixes

iPhone and Strava- .gpx import now in beta

Posted by Michael Horvath on April 21st, 2010

Strava released new features today, including the ability to import .gpx files from say, an iPhone. This is a beta release of this functionality, so if you tend to get sweaty palms when contemplating phrases like “file download”, proceed with caution. We will continue working on a smoother process to handle files from mobile apps. You can read more about it here, including step-by-step instructions.

Here is a list of some of the new things on Strava today with attribution to some of our members who suggested we work on these ideas:

  • iPhone .gpx file compatibility – see above
  • QOM – climb and segment rankings are now designated as QOM or KOM depending on gender. Thanks! Sarah Hagstrom for her kind reminders that “KOM” is not inclusive language.
  • ranking view preference settings – in your Profile, you can now choose how you want to see results: Women first, Men first, Overall, or by Club. Thanks! Kathryn Aaker, Sarah Hagstrom and Shannon Cohen.
  • ride flagging – have you seen a ride, climb or segment effort anywhere on Strava that looks too good to be true? When this happens you can now click the ‘flag’ link and notify us. Strava will notify you by email when we have resolved the flag. Thanks! Richard Wilson and Lars Blackmore.
  • redesigned leaderboard – now has fixed 7-day intervals instead of rolling 7-day with the ability to go back in time. We also removed competitions having to do with Strava “points” (too controversial). Now people with persistence can make it to the top of the list by riding more, not just faster, than everyone else. Thanks! Gary Kenworthy. Leaderboards by gender are coming soon.
  • many small fixes for things like favorite climbs, location-based searches, and events administration

Strava reaches one million miles and counting

Posted by Michael Horvath on April 19th, 2010

We have been keeping our eye on Strava’s milage tally for the past few weeks since we’ve been rapidly approaching one million miles.  We decided to keep quiet about the upcoming milestone; however, we also wanted to mark the occasion with a prize for the individual who put us over.

Bryn Dole, a rider of Sunnyvale, CA pushed us past one million miles with a 54.7 mile ride on April 17th 2010 he named “Sick and Tired.”  We’d like to honor his and our achievement with a full Strava kit.

Sometimes you can still achieve great things when you are sick and tired.

Congratulations Bryn!  And keep on riding everyone.  You never know what milestone we’ll reach next.
